Wild Coyote in the Audubon, Upper Hurstville, and TwinBrook area:
I received a call from a resident in the 6000 block of Garfield, and was informed that some neighbors told her they seen a wild coyote going in her back yard. As I was sitting on State St. at Garfield writing a report the coyote appeared I followed it until it left the area on Camp heading toward Jefferson. I notified NOPD , Audubon Park Security, and called Charles Parker Wildlife removal @ (504) 338-7517 and informed them of the situation.

FYI- a coyote has no qualms about killing a cat or a dog and can probably take on all but the largest canine breeds (say, German Shepherds and larger). This is a real problem for the ‘hood ‘til the animal gets caught (or shot). Humans are rarely attacked but I cannot speak for this particular coyote!

ABC 26 News Story
ABC 26 did a story on LASPCA changes that featured Henri, Isabelle, Tink and our newest Team Member, Barb. Above was the intro package pre commercial. The three of them are playing, Tink drinking water (running into the wall) and Isabelle in the pool. Here is the full story!

Ordinance 27953 - the Intact Dog Permit passed City Council unanimously today

INTACT DOG ORDINANCE
In order to combat the growing pet overpopulation problem in New Orleans we have consulted on an ordinance that would impose an intact dog license on anyone who's dog is not spayed/neutered. Please review the ordinance and see below for the reasons we support it.
1. Statistics show that intact male dogs are 2.6 times more likely to bite than their unneutered counter parts. Every dog that has been involved in a major attack in New Orleans was intact when it occurred. With the aggressive dog issue in New Orleans coming to a pinnacle this month, we feel that this ordinance can bring us one step closer to a bite-free community.
2. The pet overpopulation of the New Orleans area continues to climb. We euthanized over 400 healthy and adoptable animals last year alone because we did not have the space available to find homes for them. By giving us a legal reproach to the many repeat offenders we have coming in the shelter on roaming at large charges we can close the loop hole that has been allowing these animals to continue to reproduce on the streets.
3. The LA/SPCA has a long and storied history with the city and the Animal Control contract. This ordinance along with the Rabies Tag fee re-classification will enable the LA/SPCA to provide revenue streams into the often lacking Animal Control contract. We are always proactively looking for creative ways to fund this essential service.

NEW ORLEANS – Three dogs that were reported missing after an animal rescuer with the Humane Society of Louisiana had her truck stolen with the dogs inside have been returned.
The dogs were reported missing Monday inside of a warehouse on North Claiborne Avenue after the truck was stolen.
Right now, the dogs are being housed at the Jefferson Animal Control facility in Harahan. They are said to be in good health, and the owners of the dogs were able to retrieve them.

NEW ORLEANS - An animal rescuer with the Humane Society of Louisiana says she had her truck stolen while three of her beloved animals were inside Monday morning inside a warehouse on North Claiborne Avenue and that attempts to alert police and call 911 proved frustrating.
Shoshana Rothschild said she heard someone starting up her truck around 10:30 a.m. Monday and before she could reach the vehicle a thief was speeding away with it and her pets.
Rothschild said the stolen pets included a 180-pound St. Bernard-Doberman mix called ‘John Deere;’ a black and tan Miniature Pinscher named ‘Little Man;’ and a Miniature Pinscher-Dachsund mix called ‘Tick.’ According to a press release from Jeff Dorson of the Humane Society, Rothschild immediately called 911 to ask for help and ended up calling several times in the late morning and early afternoon but said she received no response and that future calls were unreturned. “My own police department never even bothered to show up to take a report,” the release quoted Rothschild as saying. Rothschild said she and her sister eventually flagged down a police car and were told to go fill out a report at the First District police station, which she did. Rothschild’s truck is described as a tan 2003 Chevy Silverado, 2500 HD Series, with an extended cab bearing a Texas license plate 40CV73. An animal sticker/magnet was on the back with a white and black footprint reading “Save Animals.”
