Belle Chasse animal shelter director booked with embezzling more than $22,000 | NOLA.com:

The director of the Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society's shelter in Belle Chasse has been arrested for allegedly pocketing more than $22,000 that the group collected through pet adoptions and donations, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office said Tuesday. Denise McCoy Manger, 40, of Belle Chasse was booked Monday with theft.
The society's board notified the Sheriff's Office earlier this month of possible internal theft. The investigation continues, and officials said the total amount stolen could top $40,000. Manger allegedly confessed that she stole the cash to support a prescription drug addiction.
"It is very disappointing to learn that someone, who PAWS and the community entrusted to help protect sheltered animals, took advantage of a situation just to support a drug addiction," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release. "These funds were to help provide for the humane and loving treatment of stray and homeless animals. Hopefully, Ms. Manger gets the help she needs."

The non-profit society's board gets money through donations and payments from pet adoptions. Manger confessed to taking money from both sources, sheriff's Commander Eric
