The Historic New Orleans Collection and the University of New Orleans Press have partnered to celebrate the life and work of John Mendes through an exhibition and book signing.

An amateur photographer, Mendes (1888–1965) captured New Orleans from 1916 until the mid 1930s. More than 50 of his images will be showcased at the Williams Research Center in the exhibition titled RememberingDogs in My Life: The Photographs of John T. Mendes on view December 1, 2009, through February 28, 2010. Each of the featured images is a recent print from the photographer’s original gelatin dry-point negatives.

Accompanying the exhibition is the release of Dogs in My Life: The New Orleans Photographs of John Tibule Mendes, a new title from the University of New Orleans Press. The book consists of a compilation of Mendes’s photographs complemented by excerpts from his 1964 self-published memoir detailing his passion for dogs and the numerous pets in his life.

The public is invited to attend the opening reception for the exhibition and a book signing on Tuesday, December 1, at the Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Editor Bill Lavender and John H. Lawrence, director of museum programs at The Collection and author of the introduction to Dogs in My Life, will be available discuss the artist and his work. Copies will be available at the book signing and are currently on sale at The Shop at The Collection for $26.95. Both the exhibition and the opening reception are free and open to the public.
