CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Proctor and Gamble company has recalled specific types of dry pet food because it may be infected with salmonella.
Although no cases of salmonella-related illnesses have been reported, the company has recalled variations of Eukanuba dry dog foods, IAMS dry dog foods and IAMS dry cat foods that were distributed in the United States.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 0.1 percent of the annual production of the dry pet foods have been infected.
Salmonella can affect animals that eat the infected products and may also affect people who don't wash their hands properly after handling the infected products, according to the FDA.
Symptoms of salmonella infection in pets include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
People are encouraged to monitor their pets and to wash their hands thoroughly after handling their pets' food.
The recall marks at least the second recall of dog food for salmonella in recent months. In June, massive pet food recall related to Natura Pet Food products was announced.

Over the rainbow...
We were so completely devastated to hear that sweet baby O passed away. It literally shook Bradley to the core and brought tears to his eyes. We were so blessed to have been able to take care of him over the years and recently... last weekend. He was such a gentle baby and in his own special way, he would get so excited to see Bradley. Honestly - He would follow Bradley everywhere until it was jambalaya time! After jambalaya time - he would try to stick close to Bradley to try to talk him into a 2nd helping! What dog does that? What a life this little man had.
Look at that post jambalaya smile!
You my darling O were one of a kind... Watch over Mommy because these days will be hard for her. It is so hard to loose your very best friend. Your spirit remains and memories of you will last forever.
We are so thankful she shared you with us!

SPCA raising awareness on new Intact Dog Ordinance
Thanks to WWL for helping raise awareness with this story.
The New Orleans Advocate - New Orleans Intact Animal Permit Law
A few things... because I am already getting blasted this morning.
Please make no mistake - I am NOT against breeders. We have plenty of clients that have purchased from breeders and I am completely... without exception supportive of those clients. Some of these pets came from very well known and respected breeders who would welcome the process of being licensed. Likewise some have come from "back yard breeders". This movement is about educating the public regarding the breeders that are not doing the right thing... those that have breeding facilities that are only focused on revenue vs. treating animals humanely.
If you agree with the things we have posted about the New Orleans Intact Animal Permit Law and do not have the time to send a letter to The New Orleans Advocate (TP/NOLA.com), please send to me with your name and I will post for you.
We have posted 14 comments on various social media sites this morning thus far - they have deleted all posts which tells me they are reading them.
We are not attacking them - we are simply asking them to follow the law. I am making sure we position our feedback as "We are hopeful that you are taking the time to figure out how to implement these changes to your current process."
Thanks so much.
Nicole

Dear Mother Nature: Please get this out of your system before 1.21.14... I would rather a warmer Mardi Gras season. Thanks in advance.

I guess it is just easier to not follow the law. If you are on facebook - Please see our latest post. Perhaps that effort will help get appropriate attention.

Remy...
When I moved to 3101 Prytania, my neighbor and I where chatting and letting our dogs play together in her yard. She called her dog over and to my surprise she yelled "Remy" and they both came. This was the start of a wonderful relationship - Remy's Mom is a friend and also a client. During Hurricane Katrina, she wanted to evacuate with her 90 year old Aunt but would not leave Remy behind and new it was impossible to take him so, I took him with me to our family home. Remy and my Remy had the best time running all over our 5 acres and sleeping together on a bean bag chair every night. I had him for three ish months. I was devastated to hear that he passed away but I know he is in a better place. I want to believe that Remy & Remy are playing ball and resting on a bean bag chair!

Pet Overpopulation; Encourages Citizens to Spay and Neuter Their Pets
New Orleans, LA, Feb 4, 2014—Supporters of the Intact Animal Permit Law, an organization founded to promote the New Orleans Intact Animal Permit Law and encourage its enforcement, have asked the Times Picayune and The Advocate to require the listing of permit numbers in any advertisements of puppies for sale, beginning immediately. Currently, dozens of breeders run advertisements in the “dogs for sale” sections of both papers without any permit numbers being advertised.
The Intact Animal Permit requirements, specifically the requirement for advertisement of Intact Permit numbers, is enshrined in the City of New Orleans Municipal Code via ordinance, Municipal Code Chapter 18, Section 309, No.5. The code states, “The intact permit number must be displayed when advertising the puppies for sale or adoption.” This ordinance was passed unanimously by the New Orleans City Council and signed by Mayor Mitch Landrieu.
“On Jan 9th, we sent certified letters to both the Times Picayune and The Advocate asking them to uphold this law, but we have not received any response so far,” said Nita Hemeter, co-founder of the group. “We have received hundreds of letters of support from virtually every Humane/Rescue Group in the New Orleans area as well as statewide and national groups, and we included those names with our petition to the newspapers.”
Tia Torres, the founder of Villalobos Rescue Center (of Pit Bulls and Parolees fame), also supports the cause and its purpose. "When Villalobos relocated to Louisiana, we thought we would be a rescue for unwanted or unloved pit bulls. However, we have discovered that the dog abandonment and surrender problem is so overwhelming that we have become the unofficial "9th Ward Dog Pound," says Torres. “The number of mixed-breed dogs in our shelter is quickly approaching our pit bull population. As many as 9O% of the dogs we take in are strays."
Supporters of the Intact Animal Permit Law have also started a Facebook page, and between its initiation on 11/25/2013 and today, the page has garnered nearly 10,000 supporters. More than 100 volunteers have offered to send letters to the editor, sign petitions, perform outreach in local neighborhoods―and even cancel their subscriptions to the newspapers if such a measure becomes necessary―to show their dedication to this effort.
“Nearly everyone I speak with fully understands how important this step is to curtail backyard breeding,” said Jennifer Farwell, co-founder of the group. “People see stray animals starving on our streets, and they hear of all the dogs and puppies being euthanized in shelters, but they don’t know what they can do directly to stop it. Here is something the newspapers CAN do, but they apparently either don’t realize its importance or are still unaware this requirement exists. We want to educate them regarding what they can do to make a difference.”
Supporters of the Intact Animal Permit Law is also starting an awareness drive to encourage pet owners to spay or neuter their animals. The group hopes its efforts will eventually result in a “breeder evaluation program,” whereby the LASPCA and/or city or state agencies will investigate those who are breeding animals to determine whether or not they are properly caring for their animals, have proper licenses and are paying taxes.
“Given the thousands of unwanted animals that die in shelters every year, we would prefer that citizens not breed their animals, at all,” Hemeter and Farwell agreed. “If they are going to breed, they should at least care for the animals properly and pay their fair share of taxes and license fees for the income they make off these creatures.” Supporters of the Intact Animal Permit Law also encourages citizens to be on the lookout for possible breeding activity in their neighborhoods, and to provide those addresses to the LASPCA for follow up, to ensure those breeders are aware of the licensing requirements.
