It's not just wild animals that have been affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sue Sampey, president of the Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society, says some three dozen animals have been turned in to the parish shelter since the oil spill -- which is more than usual. On Saturday, officials are holding a pet food giveaway.

The shelter received a donation of 12 tons of dog and cat food, and Sampey hopes the kibble will help folks who were unemployed because of the spill keep their pets.

In the weeks after the spill, one person left three dogs tied to a post at the shelter one night. The dogs were accompanied by a note saying that owner couldn't afford to care for the animals.
